The effectiveness of ear protection depends on several things: proper use and training, maintenance of the device, and in the case of earplugs, the proper insertion and placement in the ear.
In the past, noise related hearing loss was considered an industrial related problem. Currently, more people are exposed to hearing damaging noise in leisure time activity than in the work place. Lawn mowers, chain saws, power tools, guns, cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, airplanes, concerts and discos, just to name a few, all cause sufficient levels of sound to damage your hearing. Professionals such as dentists, pilots, and musicians are also exposed to damaging levels of noise.
More and more musicians are realizing that their hearing can be damaged by exposure to the loud volumes they play. In the past, they wouldn't wear hearing protection because it actually distorted what they heard, causing them to play or sing off key. There are two types of musicians earplugs which uniformly reduce the volume level.
The style which offers the greatest attenuation requires that an ear impression be made and musician's earplugs are custom fabricated. The stock version of the musician's earplugs are called HiFi Earplugs, and can be purchased without having an ear impression.
Most hearing protectors have a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) to assist in judging their effectiveness. However, this rating is valid only if the products are worn or used as directed.
Unlike any other physical condition, you cannot build a tolerance to loud sounds. If you have a perceived tolerance to loud sounds, you may already have a hearing loss. And even if you have a hearing loss or wear hearing aids, exposure to noise can cause you to lose even more hearing, so protect what you have!

Custom Musicians Earplugs
Professional musicians from long hair to heavy metal realize that a most
important asset, their hearing, is at risk every time they perform. The
noise level of the instruments surrounding the performer must be loud
enough to be heard (even the piccolo generates sound levels up to 112dB -
roughly equivalant to a jack-hammer at 30 feet), so the ears are suffering
extreme exposure, which can, and will, cause hearing loss.
Until now, earplugs were out of the question because they altered the frequency response. These acoustically-tuned, custom made earplugs offer the most uniform attenuation as attested by some of the biggest names in the music business.
To order: Contact an audiologist or hearing aid dispenser to have ear impressions made, two for each ear (fees will vary for this service). Request long, full canals. Send the impressions to us along with your order and payment.
